Exotics Light Up GT Asia Fuji Speedway Round
Fuji Speedway, July 15: The GT Asia series made its second stop of the season in Japan at Fuji Speedway on July 13-14, and featured a couple of eye-catching McLaren MP4-12Cs at the front of the field for the pair of 50-minute contests, sat alongside an exotic mix of GT3 machinery from Aston Martin (Vantage), Ford (GT), Lamborghini (Gallardo LP560), Porsche (GT3 R), Ferrari (F458) and BMW (Z4 GT3), among others.
For this round, the field also featured a quartet of Audi R8 LMS ultras as raced in China's R8 LMS Cup. Running a control tyre provided by Yokohama, the racing is as close as it is intense. The first race saw former champions Clearwater Racing take the spoils in their McLaren after the Craft Racing AMR entry of Frank Yu and Stefan Mucke, which had crossed the finish line first, were penalized for a pitstop infringement in their Aston Martin Vantage V12. The other MP4-12C, with Japanese driver Akira Aida at the wheel, came third.
The second race was dominated by the Audi R8 LMS Ultra of Marchy Lee and Jeffery Lee, followed home by the identical machine of teammates Alex Yoong and Francis Hideki Onda. The AMR Vantage made it two podiums in a row with third place.
The series returns to Sepang on September 13-15 for Rounds 7-8.
